Promotes Blood Flow to Hooves & Uterous
Drug interactions
Pentoxifylline can interact with several drugs in horses, primarily because it affects blood flow, platelet function, and circulation. While equine-specific interaction studies are limited, veterinary references and pharmacology data suggest caution with the following combinations:
NSAIDs (such as phenylbutazone/Bute, flunixin/Banamine, firocoxib/Equioxx)
Combining pentoxifylline with NSAIDs may increase the risk of gastrointestinal irritation, ulceration, or bleeding because both can affect blood flow and platelet activity. Monitoring is advised, especially in dehydrated horses or long-term use cases.
Anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs
Pentoxifylline may increase bleeding risk when used with medications that thin the blood or reduce clotting. This includes aspirin or heparin-type therapies.
Theophylline or caffeine-like drugs (xanthines)
Pentoxifylline is chemically related to xanthines and may increase the effects or blood levels of theophylline, potentially causing excitability, tremors, sweating, or elevated heart rate.
