ESC Judge’s Certification begins in January

PALMETTO, FLA – In January, ESC will begin Certifying Judges annually based on their judging experience, overall industry involvement, and ability to demonstrate ongoing personal development. We have researched the number of horse shows judged using Saddle Horse Report’s Judge’s Search data. The levels of certification are as follows:

Standard Judge – Individuals with trotting breed experience who have judged less than 10 shows. Standard level applicants will be required to attend an ESC in-person Judges Clinic, or demonstrate that they have attended another recognized governing body’s clinic in the past 5 years. They are qualified to judge ESC events with less than 250 entries. All judges must complete a brief Virtual Webinar and take a rulebook orientation quiz annually.

Premier Judge – Individuals who have judged 10-30 horse shows. These professionals are qualified to officiate shows with approximately 250 entries and are encouraged to offer mentoring to Standard level judges. Premier officials must complete a brief Virtual Webinar and take a rulebook orientation quiz annually.

Elite Judge – Individuals who have officiated at more than 30 horse shows and are qualified to judge all levels of competition. Elite certified professionals are sought after for mentoring, clinic facilitation and ESC Council memberships. They are the preferred choice for officiating at major Championship events. Elite officials must complete a brief Virtual Webinar and take a rulebook orientation quiz annually.

The Certification Fee is $100 until February 28th and includes the $6M liability insurance policy. The Certification Fee will increase to $150 on March 1, 2026.

In 2026: All Officials must be REGISTERED with ESC, if not Certified.
Beginning in 2027: All ESC sanctioned shows will be required to hire only Certified Judges and Stewards.
